During your massage

Every massage is customized to your body and your goals.

Depending on your needs, your treatment may include aspects of neuromuscular therapy, sports massage, Active Isolated Stretching, and other specialized techniques. Throughout the session, I'll explain what I'm finding and answer any questions you have so you leave with a better understanding of your body.

After your appointment

Many clients leave feeling looser, more mobile, and more relaxed immediately after their session.

Depending on what we worked on, I may recommend relevant active isolated stretches, movement exercises, or self-care techniques to help you maintain your progress between appointments.

You'll leave with more than a massage.

I’m a big believer in what I like to call self-maintenance activities. These are exercises and things that you can do on a daily basis to help yourself feel better and function better. I believe what you can do for yourself on a daily basis can be nearly as important as what someone can do “to” you occasionally. See if you can get into the habit of regularly doing some or all of these exercises. You will thank yourself for it!

After all, you want to feel better so you can train more effectively, get through a long day at the computer without pain or fatigue, play with your kids or your dog without feeling sore afterward, climb the ladder to clean the gutters without worrying about straining your back or shoulder, and fall asleep easily at the end of the day so you can recharge for tomorrow!

"You help keep me running, swimming, and rolling down the road."

I look forward to my massage every other Monday with you. It helps me recover from the previous week's training... and gives me a chance to have a nap! Sundays can be especially tough on this old body with competing and traveling to and from events when it's a race weekend. It's those weekends that I especially rely on you to help me recover! Thanks, Cary... you help me keep running, swimming, and rolling down the road.

Frequently asked questions

How long are appointments?

Most massage sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, although we can work anywhere from 30 to 140 mins depending on your needs and goals, your physical size, and the state of your tissue. Initial appointments may take a little longer so we have time to review your health history, perform a postural examination, and discuss your concerns.

Will my massage be painful?

Not necessarily. It depends on the state of your tissue. Tight muscles result in reduced blood flow that brings about a condition called ischemia, in which the cells of the tissue are deprived of oxygen. Ischemic tissue is painful tissue. While therapeutic massage may involve working through areas of tension or restriction, I always adjust pressure based on your comfort level and the quality of the tissue. Communication throughout your session is encouraged.

What should I wear?

Depending on each individual's level of comfort, massage clients may remove all of their clothing or leave underpants or running shorts on. I always respect the personal preference of the individual. You'll be properly draped with a top sheet throughout your massage. Only the area being worked on will be uncovered. It is important to remove all jewelry - especially necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Some piercings can get in the way or may be inadvertently snagged, which might be uncomfortable. If you wear a toupee or wig, or have hair extensions, please share that with me beforehand. It can be awkward if your hair falls off in the middle of the massage. It’s best to come to your massage appointment unadorned.

How often should I schedule a massage?

That depends on your goals. Some clients benefit from weekly or biweekly sessions during recovery, while others maintain their progress with monthly appointments. We'll discuss what makes the most sense for your needs.
