Meet Cary Bland, LMT, NMT, SMT

Athlete, massage therapist and neighbor

I've been lending my healing hands to those "in need of kneading”, helping people move and feel better for more than 40 years throughout the Washington, D.C. area.

My original experience with massage came from my years as a competitive cyclist. I was very fortunate to benefit as a junior racer from the wealth of knowledge of the former Polish National Cycling Team coach, Eddie Borysewitcz, who made his way to northern New Jersey - and our NJBC Paris-Sport cycling team - after defecting following the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He became our team coach for one year before becoming the U.S. National Team Coach the following year.

Cycling is a sport with a long tradition of utilizing massage for recovery purposes, and Eddie B taught us what an important role it played for ensuring optimal performance in training and racing.

In addition to Eddie B, our team was fortunate to benefit from the efforts of soigneur extraordinaire, Amos Otley, who worked for the U.S. National Team and Olympic Team. I received most of my massage during my early days of racing from Amos. He is the person who inspired me to become a massage therapist, and I consider him my mentor. I owe a lot to my friend Amos!

You deserve to move better

I was among the first massage therapists in the United States to become certified in Sports Massage in 1985 and had the privilege of serving on the National Sports Massage Team at international competitions, including the Goodwill Games and Winter Olympics.

I worked at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs with the U.S. National Cycling Team as well as trade teams at prominent national and international cycling events. I also co-founded the National Capital Area Sports Massage Team, where I spent years providing post-race massage therapy at local athletic events. More recently, I served for 10 years on the D.C. Massage Therapy Licensing Board, helping ensure that those serving the public met the highest professional standards. As a competitive cyclist and runner for more than 30 years, I bring a great deal of knowledge and experience to my work as a massage therapist. This helps me appreciate firsthand the demands that active people place on their bodies.

That experience helps me better understand - and better care for - the clients I work with every day. Speaking of personal experience, I recently “walked the walk” by undergoing a total hip replacement procedure myself, providing me with invaluable personal understanding of the joint replacement experience. This makes me a more understanding and effective provider of care for members of this ever-growing community … what I jokingly refer to as "the Bionic Joint Club.”

For years my tagline has been "Specializing in Massage for Active People." But don't let that fool you. I've worked with everyone from couch potatoes to world-class athletes, and I've treated clients from 6 to 104 years old. I've seen just about everything, and I believe everyone deserves to feel and move better.

Athlete's Perspective

A competitive cyclist and runner for more than 40 years, giving me firsthand insight into the demands active people place on their bodies.

Extensive Training

Over four decades, I’ve continued to study a wide variety of therapeutic techniques, which have added to my “therapeutic toolbox,” giving me further options to address a variety of issues that clients encounter.

More Than Massage

An important part of what I do is educate you about your body so you can take better care of yourself. A greater understanding of relationships between different areas of your body helps inform your self-care. For instance, learning that tightness in the anterior thighs leads to shortening of muscles in your back and neck means you can stretch the front of your legs to bring about relief of your neck pain!

Understanding those interrelationships helps empower you to be able to have alternative choices for relief when you might think you’re out of options. It's one of the reasons many clients tell me they've learned more about their bodies working with me than they ever have from other healthcare providers.

The Healing Man: Cary Bland

A valued member of our club

This man with healing hands;

A group of us know him quite well—

OF COURSE... it's Cary Bland!

His education is first-rate,

His touch is soft, yet firm;

He tries to help us rectify

Those lessons we don't learn.

A runner and race cyclist, too—

His body's fit and strong;

He practices his own sage words

So how could he be wrong?

He has a smile that captivates—

He's gentle and so kind;

A nicer individual

You'd be hard-pressed to find!

He gives holistic therapy—

Soothes body and our mind;

And since these two go hand in hand—

He makes us feel divine!

Massages are his specialty—

He irons out our pain,

And helps relieve our aches and stress

So we don't go insane.

He works us through our injuries—

Gives tips to make us well;

But when we discount his wise words

Our bodies give us hell!

His magic fingers ease what ails

His methods—tried and true;

He advocates for us to stretch—

It keeps us limber, too.

He thinks about the longer run

Unlike both you and me;

He wants us to be moving fast

When we are 83!

We thank you so much Cary, 'cause

You help us to renew;

We'd have to end our running days

If we did not have you!
